On the 12 February 2025, Tallulah Chapman gave a very comprehensive presentation of the role of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) which even for a business like mine that has worked exclusively in wood for nearly 50 years, highlighted a serious breadth of concerns and opportunities. In addition to the obvious information about the importance of forestry, both environmentally and industrially, they work laterally in many allied areas such as rubber harvesting and processing, recycled wood-based materials and the ethics of protecting the forestry labour force and indigenous people’s rights. There was also a lot of practical guidance on the steps to acquiring certification and the legitimate use of their logos and their perceived value in the marketplace. My personal view is that gaining FSC certification is not a job that can be half done, the whole supply chain has to have rigorous credibility, and some very small businesses might struggle with the amount of work that involves. However, I also appreciate the preparation for an inevitable increase in regulations and necessity for protection of this precious resource now and in the future.
